Covarey - (via Miniere di Herin) - Covarey (Champdepraz)

Start from
Covarey (Champdepraz) (1.260 m)
Arrival point
Covarey (Champdepraz) (1.260 m)

The trail runs mainly through the forest leading to the Herin mines.
The section of the scenic footbridges, although well protected, is not suitable for those who suffer from vertigo. This is a route for those who want to discover the opposite side of the Chalamy valley, where the old Herin mines are located. The return along the suspended footbridges allows us to admire the valley in all its glory until we return to the starting point.

Start point description

From the Verrès freeway exit, turn left in the direction of Aosta. After a couple of kilometers, on the left, you will find the junction for Champdepraz with signs for the Mont Avic Nature Park. You go through the entire village and begin to climb the Chalamy valley, with its many hairpin bends. You continue until you reach the Covarey parking lot, where you leave your car.

Trail description

From Covarey, descend along the paved road to the houses of Barbustel, where you turn left and continue along the paved road for a few hundred meters where, on the left, is the beginning of the trail.
The trail climbs with a traverse in the steep forest until it reaches the path of Ru de Chevrère and Montjovet, where you follow it to the right, passing over characteristic footbridges, until you reach the road just before Herin. Without reaching the village of Herin, you follow the rural road to the left, which, with a steeper path, leads to the mines.
After visiting the area, without entering the dilapidated buildings, cross over to the left along the path marked 8, with sections of nice mule track, until you reach the Arp, where the rural road is located. Follow it downhill with wide switchbacks until you find, on the right, the path going downhill and follow it to the ru where we arrived earlier.
Now follow the entire ru to the right, which alternates between quieter stretches and passages on exposed but very scenic footbridges, to reach the trail that goes up to Praz-Oursie. Descend to the main trail, deviate to the left and reach Covarey.
